QUESTION

I'm heading into college basketball, but I'm tired of hiding myself. What advice do you have on how to approach it? Should I test the waters out first and give it time? I am also rooming with fellow teammates.

Answer

Hi!

Heading into college is a big chapter of your life, and going in with a commitment to your team is a great way to create lasting bonds. My advice here is to continue being true to yourself, but take it at your own pace.

If it makes you feel more safe and comfortable, testing the waters is an absolutely valid way to go about building trust and finding allies, just remember always that your authenticity is powerful, and no matter what, you deserve to be accepted for who you are. Lean on supportive friends and resources at your university. Trust that being yourself is the surest way to deepening your connections and strengthening your team. Keep going!
