QUESTION

What advice would you give to a trans person who's worried about being able to engage in person with sport? I'm really enjoying the WNBA and would love to play even just for fun and fitness but it feels like I'm not welcome.

Answer

Find Inclusive Leagues. Look for local recreational leagues or community centers that explicitly state their inclusivity policies. Some areas have LGBTQ+ or specifically trans-friendly sports leagues. Connect with people who support and affirm your identity. Allies can be crucial in helping you feel more comfortable and welcomed in sports settings. Participate in Inclusive Events, boost confidence and community big time! many cities host LGBTQ+ sports events or tournaments. Participating in these can be a way to engage with sports in a more welcoming environment. If you can’t find an inclusive league, consider starting your own pickup games with friends or like-minded individuals. This can create a safe and welcoming space for you and others. Remember that sports are meant to be fun and a way to stay healthy. Focus on your enjoyment and personal fitness, regardless of the competitive aspect. That is definitely easier said than done, but it’s a step-by-step process. The first step is research, then doing it.
